New England has many great climbing areas and all are within minutes to just a few hours away from the TMO New England's Adventure Instructor & Guide Training Center. New England is home to a sea of granite and offers endless amounts of, bouldering, face, slab climbing.
WOLF students will have remote areas all to themselves to hone in on rock climbing technique, anchors & placements, safety management, and multi-pitch climbing. Participants will learn and practice the finer points of different belay techniques such as the hip belay, running belay, fixed belay, and more! Fixed lines are an important tool for large groups and guiding applications. Well learn how to efficiently use, build and maintain them. Roped team travel is a complicated endeavor that requires skill, technique and teamwork. Well cover everything from why and how to use a prussic, to team dynamics and risk management. You will learn how to identify different types of hazards and minimize group exposure to things like rock fall and river crossings, avalanches and ice travel these are some examples of objective hazards.
WOLF. Ice Climbing
There's a balance of cold winter temperatures and sunshine that make ice climbing in the NE some of the best in the country. The ice climbing in NY High Peaks, The Whites and surrounding areas have everything from easy, moderate top-rope climbs to steep, technical multi-pitch routes.
You'll learn comprehensive avalanche safety awareness and emergency response in a winter mountain environment and professional incident response. The Berkshires, Adirondacks High Peaks and the snowy peaks of the White Mountains are ideal locations to develop technical, winter mountaineering leadership skills.
We use curriculum that is nationally recognized material that prepares our WOLF participants to be safe back in the country. We'll examine loose snow, wet snow, soft slab, and hard slab avalanches. You'll learn the definition of terms such as alpha angle, and bed surface. As a group, we will travel safely through steep avalanche terrain, including cornices, mixed ice & snow. We'll learn about equipment selection, route finding, campsite selection, avalanche rescue. Someone buried in an avalanche has an 87% chance of survival if found within the first fifteen minutes. We will practice by using probes, learn how the beacons work, and participate in effective search patterns in order to quickly and efficiently find a buried person.
AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Terrain
The level one is a 3 day/24 hour introduction to avalanche hazard management.
The course will Provide a basic understanding of avalanches. Describe a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain. Focus on identifying the right questions, rather than on providing answers. Give lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the field.
Students will participate in developing a good understanding of how to prepare for and carry out a trip, understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).
A final debrief includes a knowledge quiz to test student comprehension and to give feedback to instructors on instructional tools. Students are encouraged and counseled on how to apply the skills learned and told that no course can fully guarantee safety, either during or after course completion. A link is made to a future AIARE Level 2 course.
Student learning outcomes.

You may also choose to leave the calmer waters and instead take on our river skills-intensive trip in a whitewater kayak. Learn to read the river while paddling your canoe or kayak through sections of whitewater rapids. New England has some of the finest white water runs anywhere. While learning to brace and roll in pools, we'll take it out to the ponds and rivers of the NE.
